(16 km south of Kasaragod on the national highway. Open 0900 - 1730 hrs) The 17th century Bekal Fort is one of the largest and best preserved forts in Kerala. This imposing circular structure of laterite rises 130ft above sea level and stands on a 35- acre headland that runs into the Arabian Sea. There is an observation tower with a score of picturesque peepholes, an ancient Anjeneya Temple with stucco images of Gods on its walls, an ancient mosque said to have been built by Tipu Sulthan , a sea bastion and underground passages that are great crowd pullers.

backwater stretches in Kerala. Fed by four rivers and dotted with numerous little
islands, this much favoured destination offers enchanting houseboat cruises. The
Bekal Resorts Development Corporation provides houseboat services on the Tejaswini
River from Kottapuram in Neeleshwaram to Kannur, along the Valiyaparamba Backwaters.

The inflow of tourists to Madakkal Thuruthu at Kavvayi in Kannur is high as the picturesque backwaters and spotted lush green mangroves lure people from faraway lands. Madakkal Thuruthu situated in Valiyaparamba panchayat has been included in the water street project in the state. Mangroves grown between Kurippumadu and Madakkal are a major attraction here. Many people visit here to catch fish and collect clams and mussels. The mangroves planted with the combined efforts of Valiyaparambu grama panchayat and forest department almost one and a half decades ago are now at least 6-metre high.
Ranipuram is a renowned tourist destination in the northern tip of Kerala. Located in Kasaragod, it is situated 750 m above sea level. In ancient times, River Chandragiri, which flows near the fort, bordered the two kingdoms of Kolathunadu and Tulunadu. Later, the region around the river came under the Vijayanagara Empire. When the empire fell, the Keladi Nayakas, who had carried out the administration, took control of the area. When Shivappa Nayak took over the reins, he renovated and built many forts. One of them was the Chandragiri fort, which he built in the 17th century. The fort is now managed by the Department of Archaeology.

( 47.5 km ) Arakkal Kettu was the residence of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas, the only Muslim royal family of Kerala. Protected by the Archaeological and Tourism Department, this palace complex is today a museum. The Arakkal Kettu Museum houses a splendid display of numerous artefacts and heirlooms belonging to the Rajas. The musuem is closed on Mondays.
